FIVE-MONTH RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

The International Institute of Social History (IISH) of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) is located in Amsterdam. Founded in 1935, it is one of the world's largest documentary and research institutions in the field of social history in general and the history of the labour movement in particular. IISH holds over 3,000 archival collections, some one million printed volumes and about as many audio-visual items. Gathered from all over the world, the IISH collections provide a unique body of materials on social conditions and social movements. For an overview of the IISH collections and their coverage across the globe see: www.iisg.nl/collections.

Facilitating the use of these materials for research by the global scholarly community has always been central to the mission of the IISH. Thanks to the generous help of the retail financial service provider SNS-Reaal the IISH can now proudly announce the launch of a fellowship programme for researchers from Eastern Europe and the countries of the former Soviet Union who wish to use its collections for the study of labour relations in their home countries, in other parts of the world, or from a comparative or transnational perspective.

The minimum requirement for an IISH fellowship is a Ph.D. degree. The fellows’ research plan should fit the institute’s ‘Global Labour History’ programme [for information cf.: http://www.iisg.nl/publications/globlab.pdf]. Fellows are expected to write a report on their research activities at the end of the fellowship period, to take part in the activities of the institute's Research Department, and to give at least one public lecture. Applications should be submitted no later than May 1, 2010.

Fellows receive a monthly stipend of € 1500. The fellowship also covers an economy return flight to the Netherlands as well as accommodation and health insurance for the duration of fellows' stay in Amsterdam.

Scholars interested in applying should send us the official application form (downloadable from http://www.iisg.nl/research/fellowship-application.pdf), accompanied by:

  • a detailed research proposal of some 2,000 words in English, including a 150 word summary of the intended research;
  • a workplan;
  • three letters of reference;
  • a curriculum vitae;
  • a list of publications.
