Cultivating marine algae for food production using different techniques, viz. cultivation along with aquaculture units (functions as biofilters), by artificial culturing and tissue culture techniques. Species belonging to green algae, brown algae and red algae were grown and maintained for these studies. Research included study of uptake of excess of chemicals present in the effluents by the macro algae as nutrients. Agar agar was extracted from Gracilaria edulis and G. verrucosa by standard laboratory methods and found that G. edulis yielded more agar and was found better in quality like gel strength, sulphate content, melting temperature and gelling temperature.
