About the lecture course, Compound Transformation:

Course Title:  Compound Biotransformation
Number of Lectures:  11 (22 h)
Number of Seminars:  7 (14 h)
Language of the Course:  English
Name of the Lecturer,
occupation, scientific
degree:
Associate Professor Maria Antonova,  Ph.D. in
Biochemistry
Lecturer’s personal page:  www.bio.bsu.by/biohim/antonova_english.html
Goals:
Learning of biochemical fundamentals of
biotransformation of  endogenous compounds and
xenobiotics in living organisms; forming of
understanding of commonness of processes of
biotransformation of  endogenous compounds and
xenobiotics; learning of essential principles of using
enzymes of the biotransformation of xenobiotics for
solving ecological, biotechnological, pharmacological,
toxicological and medical problems
Prerequisites:   Biochemistry, xenobiology, biotechnology
Contents:
Biochemical mechanisms of biotransformation of
hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds of endogenous
and xenobiotic origin. Intracellular localization of enzymes
of xenobiotics biotransformation and types of the catalyzed
reactions: redox reactions, hydrolysis and conjugation
reactions. Peculiarities of regulation of processes of
biotransformation. Species- and tissue-specificity of
reactions of biotransformation and their role in adaptation
of organisms to negative physical and chemical
environmental factors. Use of enzymes of
biotransformation of xenobiotics for synthesis of organic
compounds, biodegradation of compounds of
anthropogenic origin and biomonitoring of environmental
pollution. Application of modern information technologies
for modeling of biotechnology processes using enzymes of
biotransformation of xeno-biotics
Teaching methodology:  Lectures, laboratory сlasses, colloquiums, testing
