[In the paper, the author developed a new approach to analyze the fundamental ecological issue, the interactions between organisms in ecosystems. He suggested to use the methodology of   inhibitory analysis to study interactions in trophic chains. Important situation is the top–down control of plankton by benthic filter-feeders.
