Аннотация The article analyses one of the fundamental texts of urban theory - Georg Simmel’s essay “The Metropolis and Mental Life” (1903). Like works of other German thinkers at the turn of the 20th c. Simmel’s interpretation of urban experience correlates to a large with literary city images created in the 19th c. as well as two decades later in a modernist novel. Aspects of metropolis, elucidated by Simmel, appear not only in novels’ themes, but also in their form and artistic principles.
