SMART is a major new research enterprise established by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in partnership with the National Research Foundation of Singapore (NRF). SMART serves as an intellectual hub for international research collaborations, not only between MIT and Singapore, but also involving researchers from the region and beyond. At SMART, we identify and carry out research on critical problems of societal importance. SMART is a magnet attracting and anchoring global research talent, while simultaneously instilling and promoting a culture of translational research and entrepreneurship in Singapore. Four interdisciplinary research groups (IRGs) have been established to date: BioSystems and Micromechanics (BioSym), Centre for Environmental Sensing and Modeling (CENSAM), Future Urban Mobility (FM) and Infectious Diseases (ID).

Postdoctoral Associate – SimMobility (Ref: IRG_FM_2011_004)
Future Urban Mobility Interdisciplinary Research Group

Project Overview:
SimMobility is an integrated system of mobility sensitive simulation models to evaluate future urban transportation scenarios. It aims to integrate and link together various mobility-sensitive behavioural models with state-of-the-art simulators to predict the impacts of mobility demands on transportation networks, services and vehicular emissions.

Job description:
The postdoctoral associate on this project will work on developing a simulation platform integrating mobility demands on transportation, vehicular emissions, land use and energy consumption.
This will involve:

  • Software structure design for short-term, medium-term and long-term integrated simulator, based on the models developed for each module.
  • Developing the agent-based simulation platform.
  • Integrating the behavioural models and travel demand models into the platform.
  • Link the short-term, medium-term and long-term simulation to form an overall simulator.

SimMobility will make it possible to simulate the effects of a portfolio of technology, policy and investment options under alternative future scenarios.

Requirements:

  • PhD with a focus in: Computer Science, Transportation, Behavioural Modeling
  • Highly conversant in C++ and/or C programming
  • Prior experience in programming large software applications/simulators is required
  • Prior experience with programming on Linux platform and Linux GUI development is desired
  • Prior experience with transportation related software is desired
