SMART is a major new research enterprise established by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in partnership with the National Research Foundation of Singapore (NRF). SMART serves as an intellectual hub for international research collaborations, not only between MIT and Singapore, but also involving researchers from the region and beyond. At SMART, we identify and carry out research on critical problems of societal importance. SMART is a magnet attracting and anchoring global research talent, while simultaneously instilling and promoting a culture of translational research and entrepreneurship in Singapore. Four interdisciplinary research groups (IRGs) have been established to date: BioSystems and Micromechanics (BioSym), Centre for Environmental Sensing and Modeling (CENSAM), Future Urban Mobility (FM) and Infectious Diseases (ID).

Postdoctoral Associate – Development and Testing of NCC-Enabled Data Collection Techniques (Ref: IRG_FM_2011_002)
Future Urban Mobility Interdisciplinary Research Group

Project Overview:
The ubiquity technologies related to Networked Computing and Control (NCC) provides a range of new close-to-real-time data for urban mobility planning and management. The challenge rests in capturing and deploying the relevant information, using it for real-time control, improved user service, and longer-term strategic planning. The objective for this project is to implement a broad data collection effort using smart phones matched with web-based surveying tools to infer (through machine learning) household and firm activities, including mobility and location choices.

Job description:
The postdoctoral associate will coordinate and take part in the development of new data collection methods, including the use of smart phone platforms for data collection and surveying. New data fusion techniques will be developed to resolve the different types of data collected from a variety of sources. This data will be used to support the development of an integrated simulation model and behavioral models. The postdoctoral associate will work with behavioral modelers to develop new techniques to capture subjective well-being. The postdoctoral associate will oversee real-world and laboratory experiments to understand how behavior changes due to new information services.

Requirements:

  • PhD with a focus in: Transportation, Data Fusion, Computer Science, and/or Behavioural Modeling
  • Experience collecting data with mobile devices, web-based surveys, and/or passive sensors
  • Knowledge of sensor capabilities and applications
  • Experience programming on mobile platforms
  • Knowledge of incentivized survey techniques
  • Prior experience with transportation simulation software is desired
