PhD position: Scalable Compression of 3D Graphics

Work environment

The Electronics and Informatics department (ETRO) of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) has a long standing expertise in image and video compression, computer graphics, data transmission and data visualization. In data compression, ETRO is active in various areas, including transform-based coding of images, video and meshes, multiple description coding, joint source and channel coding, optimized rate allocation for various distortion metrics, error concealment, optimized transmission of scalable encoded sources, and distributed source coding. In the area of 3D graphics, ETRO covers various research aspects, including design of scalable wavelet-based mesh coding techniques, scalable joint source and channel coding of meshes, coding of dynamic meshes, texture coding, and rendering techniques. At standardization level, the expertise of ETRO in this area has concretized with the adoption by MPEG-4 AFX of the 3D graphics mesh representation and compression technology called MeshGrid.

Research topic
The ETRO department is actively involved in the standardization of multimedia technologies within the ISO/IEC JPEG and MPEG committees, and within the ITU-T VCEG committee. Additionally, ETRO is a member of the Interdisciplinary Institute for Broadband Technology (IBBT) which provides active support in research and development projects between academia and industries in Flanders. In this context, we are currently looking for a PhD candidate in the field of scalable coding of 3D graphics. The PhD work will focus on the design of novel scalable coding techniques for irregular meshes. The aim is to increase the compression performance over the current state-of-the-art while providing scalability. Various research aspects are envisaged, ranging from investigating novel transforms towards codec design, optimized rate allocation and data transmission. Besides a scientific challenge, the position provides a great opportunity to work closely together with experienced researchers in the field of multimedia compression.

Prerequisites & other requirements
You are a civil engineer or a computer scientist fascinated by mathematics and by mathematical formulations of coding problems. You are attracted by multimedia processing and have knowledge/experience in the areas of 3D graphics and digital signal processing. You have excellent programming skills (C/C++). You have good oral and written communication skills. Fluency in English is a must, given the international character of the department.

The position is available from January 2011, but it can be postponed depending on the candidate’s situation. The position is for 4 years. Salary range is conform with other similar positions; information about it is available upon request.

Applicants should send a letter explaining their research interests and experience, a complete curriculum vitae (with the relevant courses and grades), and an electronic copy of their master thesis (plus, optionally, reports of other relevant projects) to Adrian Munteanu (acmuntea[ at ]etro.vub.ac.be). To apply for this position, candidates must be already living in the EU.
