IMPRS for Heart and Lung Research now seeking excellent PhD-students with interest in the cardiovascular/lung field

Overview
Heart, vascular and lung diseases represent the highest socioeconomic burden of all diseases worldwide, with multiple interactions and several unresolved treatment challenges. In ageing societies the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases will further increase.

The IMPRS-HLR offers outstanding training for young scientists and physicians in all areas of heart, vascular and lung research. The principle concept of the school reflects the fact that research in basic and medical sciences has often followed different routes and traditions with inefficient cross-fertilization between both disciplines. The IMPRS-HLR provides a common training ground for basic researchers and physicians. Our goal is to make basic-research scientists familiar with patient-orientated scientific approach in the face of demands for innovative diagnostics and therapies (Translational Research). Physicians will gain access to intensive training in natural sciences to enhance understanding of comprehensive systematic work.

Cutting Edge Research Projects
The International Max Planck Research School for Heart and Lung Research has evolved from a joint cooperative of the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research in Bad Nauheim, the Justus Liebig University in Giessen and the Goethe University in Frankfurt. All three partners of the IMPRS-HLR have their major scientific focus in the field of “Life Sciences”.

The three departments at the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research focus on cardiac development and remodeling, alveolar development and remodeling and vascular signaling. Five additional research groups work on developmental cardiogenetics& signal transduction, cardiac regeneration, the origin of cardiac cell lines, epigenetic regulation during the establishment of respiratory cell fate & lung cancer, and non-small cell lung cancer models. Our scientists have expertise, both in basic science and translational research.

The Goethe University (Frankfurt) is one of the worldwide leading centers on cardiovascular medicine with major expertise on stem cell therapies after myocardial infarction. Additional projects focus on inflammation & pain and on cancer research. Scientists at the Justus Liebig University (Giessen) have their main focus on the cardiopulmonary system. Their work has gained worldwide reputation over the past years. Infection and immunity, as well as human nutrition, are also ongoing project themes.
All three institutions participate in numerous excellence networks in the field of cardiovascular and lung research, such as the ECCPS (Excellence Center Cardiopulmonary System). Graduate students will have the chance to choose from numerous cutting edge research projects for their graduate work.

Graduate Program
The graduate program is designed as a three-year program. All students will attend an orientation phase before entering the graduate phase. Aim of the orientation phase is to provide the basis for a successful graduation. Orientation phase includes lab rotations, scientific seminars and methods courses on the state-of-the-art techniques established at the institute. In addition, advice is given on managing everyday life in Germany including bank account, resident permit, health insurance, etc.
The graduate phase includes regular scientific seminars. Courses in scientific writing and carrier opportunities will be offered as well as German language courses. Annual retreats will help deepening scientific knowledge and improve exchange between IMPRS-students.

Application procedure
Candidates must hold a university degree such as a Master or a Diploma or equivalents in biology, biochemistry, medicine, bioinformatics or related disciplines by start of the program.

We do only accept e-mail applications. All details on your application as well as further information on the school and the program can be found on our website. http://www.imprs-hlr.mpg.de
