We are recruiting a Ph.D. student for the project: The immunological effects of compounds and extracts from Icelandic plants and the mechanism of their action, under the supervision of Dr. Jona Freysdottir, Associate Professor in Immunology, and Dr. Ingibjorg Hardardottir, Professor in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Faculty of Medicine, School of Health Sciences, University of Iceland.
The anti-inflammatory properties of isolated compounds and plant extracts will be examined by measuring their effects on cytokine and chemokine secretion, cyclooxygenase and inducible nitric oxide synthase activity in cell cultures and the mechanism by which they act by determining their effects on binding to different toll-like receptors (TLR), regulation of TLR signaling and activity of several MAP kinases and transcription factors.
The project is supported by a doctoral grant from the University of Iceland Research Fund and the Research Fund of the Science and Technology Policy Council, Iceland.
We are seeking an enthusiastic student with an MS degree in Immunology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Pharmaceutical Sciences or Medicine and preferably with experience in techniques, s.a. ELISA, flow cytometry, cell culture and Western blotting. Good English language proficiency is a must.
Note: To be eligible for admission to doctoral studies at the Faculty of Medicine the student should have a grade average of at least 7.25 [on a scale of 0-10] at B.Sc. or equivalent level.
