2012 VICE-CHANCELLOR’S POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

UNSW invites applications for a limited number of Vice-Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in 2012, to be awarded to early career researchers of exceptional calibre wishing to conduct full-time research at UNSW in any of its areas of research strengths:

  • Biomedical Sciences
  • Water, Environment, Sustainability
  • Next Generation Materials and Technologies
  • Social Policy, Government and Health Policy
  • ICT, Robotics and Devices
  • Business, Law and Economics
  • Fundamental and Enabling Sciences
  • Contemporary Humanities and Creative Arts
  • Defence and Security


Applicants must be external to UNSW i.e., not currently hold an appointment at UNSW or UNSW affiliated organisations (NeuRA, Garvan, VCCRI, CCIA). If the applicant was awarded a PhD from UNSW they must have spent at least 2 years employed at another university or research institution and the Fellowship must not be undertaken with the applicant’s UNSW PhD supervisor as a mentor.

Applicants must have been awarded a PhD, conferred (dated on testamur) no earlier than 1 January 2007 or later than 31 December 2010.

Fellows will be appointed at Academic Salary Level A (A$71K - $76K) or Level B (A$80K- $85K) per year (plus 17% employer superannuation and leave loading) based on years of experience. A Research Support Grant of A$10,000 per annum for three years will be provided on commencement. The University’s employment conditions apply to the Fellowships, including such entitlements as relocation allowance on appointment.

Fellowships will be offered for a period of 2 years, renewable for a third year subject to research performance in the top 25% of their level of appointment and evidence of actively seeking externally funded fellowships.

How to Apply

  • Only one (1) application may be submitted per applicant.
  • Download the application pack.
  • Seek the support and approval of a mentor and contact the relevant Head of School by 24 August 2011.
  • Submit a completed application pack containing documents in the following order:
    1. Completed application cover form.
    2. Research plan.
    3. Mentor statement (email acceptable).
    4. Curriculum Vitae (include qualifications, research experience and publications/other research output).
    5. Certified proof of the award of a PhD from 1 January 2007 – 31 December 2010.
    6. Names and contact details, including email addresses, of 2 referees.

The research plan must be a maximum of 4 pages, typed (12 point font) and include the following– Title of Project, Aims, Background, Proposed Research Plan, Significance of the Proposal, Alignment with UNSW’s Research Strengths, and References.

The completed application must be submitted as a single pdf file,* with the documents in the order specified above, in the following naming format: “[Surname]_UNSWVCFellowship.pdf” (eg – “Smith_UNSWVCFellowship”). Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their applications in the week commencing 17 October 2011.
