Open position in Postdoctoral Fellowship in Atmospheric Science at INPE (National Institute for Space Research) (Brazil).
Job Summary: Use of high-resolution WRF mesoscale model to evaluate the performance of Brazilian lightning detection networks
Salary: US$ 36.000 Annual
Employer: National Institute for Space Research (INPE) / São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) - Brazil
Location: Sao Jose dos Campos, Sao Paulo, Brazil
Type: Full-time experienced
Required Education: Doctorate degree
Job Description: The candidate must propose a methodology to validate with reasonable reliability the data of new lightning sensors of Brazilian Lightning Location Systems (LLS’s) using the high resolution WRF model and suggest physical aspects relevant to the lightning occurrence in southeastern Brazil. Also search scenarios that characterize and identify potential indicators of the lightning occurrence in this region. This work is part of a wider thematic project which aims to detect signs of variability related to climatic changes in the occurence and characteristics of lightning discharges detected in Brazil in the last decade.
Requirements: Applicants must have a graduated degree in Meteorology and a background in Atmospheric Sciences. It is desirable experience in the following areas: lightning physics; cloud dynamics and properties; WRF mesoscale model. Formal applications, including full CV and a cover letter describing the applicant´s research interests, should be sent to: Dr. Osmar Pinto Jr. (osmar[ at ]dge.inpe.br) until 08/20/2011.
