Ph.D position at the Department of Geography and Geology, University of Copenhagen A 3-year Ph.D scholarship in “The ground thermal regime of permafrost landforms within the Nordic area including Greenland” will be available at the Department of Geography and Geology, University of Copenhagen in cooperation with The University Centre in Svalbard, UNIS.

The project
The announced Ph.D position is part of the research network DEFROST “Impacts of a changing cryosphere - depicting ecosystem-climate feedbacks from permafrost, snow and ice” (see http://www.ncoe-defrost.org/). DEFROST is part of the Top-level Research Initiative (TRI), aiming to strengthen research and innovation regarding climate change issues in the Nordic Region as one of the three Nordic Centres of Excellence, that are funded within the sub-programme “Interactions between climate change and the cryosphere”. The aim of DEFROST is to understand how climate change induced changes in the cryosphere influence the ecosystem/geosphere processes which directly affect climate.

The Ph.D project aims to study and compare the thermal conditions in different permafrost landforms across the Nordic area at key DEFROST field sites in Svalbard (Adventdalen, Kapp Linné), Greenland (Zackenberg, Nuuk) and northern Sweden (Abisko-Taavavuoma-Tarfala) and their links to the present climate and in particular to the local snow dynamics. A main focus in this project is the influence of snow on the ground thermal state and the annual freeze-thaw processes. There will be potential for close cooperation with other DEFROST field measurements such as the meteorological measurements. The Ph.D student will use the existing borehole instrumentation, establish some new boreholes where needed, use water content instrumentation, use automatic digital camera observations and determine the permafrost ice content and type in key periglacial landforms. The Ph.D candidate will be responsible for arranging all DEFROST permafrost borehole data into the Norwegian Permafrost Database, NORPERM, for this to become Nordic, and part of the Global Terrestrial Network on Permafrost, GTN-P.

The Institute of Geography and Geology, University of Copenhagen will be the main working place. Additionally the student will have to register as an external Ph.D student in the Geology Department, in the University Centre in Svalbard, UNIS.

Qualifications
The successful candidate must hold a Master degree or equivalent qualifications in physical geography, preferably in geomorphology, with documented expertise in performing Arctic fieldwork. Fluency in spoken and written English is also a requirement.

The selection process
An evaluation committee will be appointed to evaluate the applications. Applicants will be notified of the composition of the committee and will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns her/him. The final selection of a successful candidate will be made by Professor Hanne H. Christiansen and Professor Bo Elberling, based on the recommendations of the evaluation committee. The successful candidate will then be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a Ph.D student at the Ph.D school of Science, University of Copenhagen.

Terms of employment
The successful PhD candidate will be offered a full-time Ph.D. position for a period of three years, contingent on a satisfactory performance, with the specific intent that it results in a Ph.D. degree and scientific publications. It is a prerequisite for the appointment as a Ph.D.-fellow, that the person concerned can be registered as a PhD-fellow according to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation Executive Order no 18 of 14. January 2008. Information about the PhD programs at the Faculty of Science can be found at http://www.science.ku.dk/phd/.

The salary depends on seniority, as agreed between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations, and is within the range of 23,000-30,000 DKK/month (approximately 3,100-4,000 Euro/month). The University of Copenhagen wishes to reflect the diversity of society and welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
