The Biophotonics Group (http://www.atomic.physics.lu.se/biophotonics), Department of Physics, Lund University, Sweden is seeking candidate for a 1+1 year postdoctoral position in the field of biomedical optics and spectroscopy of turbid (i.e. highly scattering) materials.
The Lund University is the largest in Scandinavia raked among the top 30 European Universities. The Biophotonics Group is internationally well-recognized as one of the most reputable biomedical optics groups involved in translational research, bringing new techniques into biomedical practice.
Absorption spectroscopy is a powerful analytical toll that is widely used for analysis of chemical composition and physical properties of diverse materials. The application of the technique to quantitative analysis of highly scattering media is though complicated since no definite optical path exists. This generally requires using sophisticated analysis methods and/or chemo-metric calibration protocols that suffer from limited accuracy, costly in industrial applications and even unfeasible in number of important biomedical cases.
An alternative to conventional absorption spectroscopy method is Photon Time-Of-Flight (PTOF) spectroscopy. There the analysis of the shape of short pulse broadened after the propagation in the tested sample allows reconstructing absorption and scattering spectra. The main application areas for the technique are in biomedical optics such as diagnostics and treatment monitoring of such severe diseases as cancer and for characterization in pharmaceutical industry. The project is focused on the further development of the novel Time-of-Flight absorption/scattering spectrometer recently commissioned by the Group and measurements in highly scattering (turbid) pharmaceutical and tissue samples.
You will work in a friendly and encouraging environment of a small, highly motivated multidisciplinary research team that is a part of one of the leading European Universities.
The prospective candidate should have obtained his/her PhD degree during last 5 years (preferably in the field of biomedical optics and/or spectroscopy) and must have sound skills as an experimentalist in optical/spectroscopic lab. Young candidates have an advantage. Familiarity with tissue spectroscopy and expertise in time correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) measurements are the assets, however all the necessary training will be provided.
