SMART is a major research enterprise established by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in partnership with the National Research Foundation of Singapore (NRF). SMART serves as an intellectual hub for international research collaborations, not only between MIT and Singapore, but also involving researchers from the region and beyond. At SMART, we identify and carry out research on critical problems of societal importance. SMART is a magnet attracting and anchoring global research talent, while simultaneously instilling and promoting a culture of translational research and entrepreneurship in Singapore. Five interdisciplinary research groups (IRGs) have been established to date: BioSystems and Micromechanics (BioSym), Centre for Environmental Sensing and Modeling (CENSAM), Future Urban Mobility (FM), Infectious Diseases (ID) and Low Energy Electronics Systems (LEES).

Postdoctoral Associate – Mesoscopic Transport Simulation (Ref: IRG_FM_2011_014)
Future Urban Mobility Interdisciplinary Research Group

Project Overview:
For the two projects in the FM IRG, SimMobility and DynaMIT2.0, an important new component: a mesoscopic traffic simulator, needs to be designed and implemented. Besides the common features, other features that are rare or absent in the current state-of-the-art, namely pedestrians, public transit, freight traffic or vehicle-to-vehicle communication, will be considered in the simulation. In addition, aspects such as incident modeling will be investigated for the simulator.

Job description:

The FM IRG is currently seeking to employ a postdoctoral associate, based at the SMART Centre in Singapore, to work on this component of the project. The job scope is as follow:

- Lead the design of the network representation;
- Lead the design of the simulation algorithm, both for real-time system (DynaMIT2.0) and the planning system (SimMobility);
- Actively contribute to the architectural design of the system, namely its parallelization and distribution;
- Advance research in any of these areas or related, namely in (mesoscopic) transport simulation, real-time traffic prediction and transport modeling.

Requirements:

The ideal person will have excellent skills in programming and computer engineering and experience in transportation engineering or simulation. S/he will necessarily have to face simulation and mathematical challenges that are hard and somewhat rare in computing courses, so a good record in subjects such as simulation, statistics and mathematics is sought.

This job is eminently about research together with a software development team, but it can accommodate a strong development component (e.g. programming), if the applicant is interested.

The candidate should have the following:
-Advanced degree in Computer Science and strong background in Transport Engineering/Simulation or related;
-Experience with simulation, transport modeling and network representation;
-Experience with working with real-time systems;
-Good communication skills

Candidate with an experience in any of the following will have an advantage:
- Large scale (e.g. entire city) transport modeling
- Optimization for real-time systems
- Parallel and distributed computing development
