PhD student position in nonlinear elasticity and nondestructive testing
for 3 years, based in Lille (France)
The LICS/LEMAC research group based at the Institute for Electronics, Microelectronics and Nanotechnologies is seeking a candidate for a PhD position in nonlinear elasticity and nondestructive testing of aeronautical components. The position is available in the framework of the ALAMSA European project.
Tasks
The work includes theoretical, numerical, and experimental aspects. The experimental task is concerned with a practical implementation of the time reversal principle in acoustics. The method consists in re-broadcasting of recorded and time-inverted signals in order to concentrate the acoustical energy in a known area in the sample. Excitations of possible defects (cracks, delaminations) in that area is accompanied by generation of nonlinear signals that have to be measured and interpreted.
The theoretical part includes the development of existing approaches in contact mechanics (description of strains and stresses arising in a contact between two solids, in the presence of friction). The theoretical study will result in boundary conditions corresponding to the internal contacting surfaces in a solid containing a defect. The numerical component of the project consists in integrating these boundary conditions into an existing code that uses a high performance version of the FEM (Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Elements Method) with a possibility of using the GPU.
Job profile
We expect the successful candidate to have strong skills in
· acoustical measurements
· solid mechanics, acoustics
· scientific computing
at the MSci (or equivalent) level.
The ability and motivation for writing and publishing papers are extremely important!
How to apply
Please send a motivation letter, curriculum vitae (including grades, the title of your Master thesis and a publication list) to Dr. V. Aleshin (vladislav.aleshin at iemn.univ-lille1.fr) and Prof. O. Bou Matar (olivier.boumatar at iemn.univ-lille1.fr). We welcome recommendation letters as well as the names and addresses of referees.
The position will be available immediately. The salary is about 1400 eur/month net. The successful candidate should start before 31/10/2013.
