Synopsis: R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics made available free to anyone through the Internet under the General Public License (GPL).  It is a powerful, highly flexible and extensible statistical system that has many features not offered by any of the major commercial counterparts.  Nowadays, R de facto became an official programming language and tool used by professional statisticians, and has also widely spread among academic researchers and industry.  This intensive three-day course will provide an introduction to the R environment and language for biologists.  The course will focus on developing practical skills in students through many hand-on exercises, analyses of real biological datasets, and work on individual projects.  In the end, students will be given all the course materials and reusable code examples.

Prerequisites: The course will be taught in English, so a good command of this language is essential, including the knowledge of basic statistical terminology.  Students are supposed to have taken at least an introductory course of Statistics before.  This is because the course will focus rather on technical aspects of the R language and system, and only brief refreshments on the theory of statistical methods under consideration will be provided.  The course is designed for beginners, and thus no previous exposure to R is expected.
