Is biodiversity instrumental for increasing stability of aquatic ecosystems? Yes!

The reason for this answer is as following. The role of biodiversity in benefiting stability of ecosystems is a matter of hot dispute. Not much was known on whether biodiversity is instrumental for increasing stability of aquatic ecosystems. A research project was done that is filling the gap in knowledge on this controversial issue. A paper was published that provides a fresh analysis and new vision of how biodiversity helps towards better stability of aquatic habitats, i.e. water quality. The author made experiments with filter-feeders (bivalves) and as result of an analysis of his experimental data, he formulated the following suggestion: to maintain water quality, it is vital to protect the functionally active biodiversity of water ecosystems. In other words, according to his vision, the protection of functionally active biodiversity, including filter-feeders, is a key to maintenance of water quality. In the paper some  new facts on interactions of pollutants with filter-feeders (marine mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis; oysters Crassostrea gigas Thunberg) were reported. A string of papers that were published by the same author afterwards supported the main conclusions of the paper under discussion  [Ostroumov S. A. Biodiversity protection and quality of water: the role of feedbacks in ecosystems.- Doklady Biological Sciences. 2002 (January).
