Аннотация The author of this essay considers such a less researched theme of the history of Saint Petersburg as the profitable houses and the public opinion about them at the end of the nineteenth century and at the beginning of the twelfth century. Having based mainly on the periodical press the author gives the image of the housing problem in Saint Petersburg, defines the correlation between the increase of the population and the demand for the apartments. The chosen theme allows to show the life of the city's dwellers and their problems. Having analyzed the scientific literature on this point the author concludes that the position of the house-owners and tenants requests more detailed investigation as it received up to now
